Does Size Matter?

The amount you take with you when you move house, could be influencing the type of property you want to invest in according to research by reallymoving.com.

In their study, they noted a marked difference of up to 174 cubic feet between specific regions of the UK property market, in particular the fact Londoners only own 737 cubic feet of possessions whilst in the East of England property owners own as much as 911 cubic feet of possessions…

Analysing this data it is clearly evident that the type of property investments available are affecting the amount of possessions property owners are willing to keep.

With the average Londoner living in a 1 bedroom apartment, this amount of possessions makes perfect sense, especially when a large sofa equates to 45 cubic feet, a bed 40 cubic feet and a TV just 3 cubic – small apartments require fewer possessions…

Speaking further on this research Rosemary Roger Director of reallymoving.com also feels that these statistics reflect the affordability of space. For instance, the fact that many Londoners tend to move more often or can only afford smaller spaces the closer they move to the capital is easily comparable to evident affordability of properties in the East of England.

Yet the East of England is not alone…

According to their research, the average amount of possessions moved per region was:
  • East of England – 911 cubic feet
  • Home Counties – 897 cubic feet
  • Midlands – 891 cubic feet
  • South England – 877 cubic feet
  • Wales – 868 cubic feet
  • South West England – 856 cubic feet
  • North West England – 844 cubic feet
  • North East England – 828 cubic feet
  • Northern Ireland – 783 cubic feet
  • Scotland – 788 cubic feet
  • London – 737 cubic feet
